Axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating and odor)

Excessive sweating or sweating more than normal is medically termed as Hyperhidrosis. Again Axillary hyperhidrosis refers to excessive armpit sweating. Though sweating helps to keep the body cool, excessive sweating is annoying. The dripping sweat is a huge discomfort and embarrassment as it may cause odor and stains in the clothes. Excessive sweating may curb people from indulging in fun activities, affect their self-image, or in worse cases, restrict their career choices.

Is treatment available?

Most of the people who suffer from excessive sweating are not aware that there are treatments available for axillary hyperhidrosis. The dermatologist evaluates the underlying cause and may start the treatment with prescribed antiperspirants or other topical treatments or oral medications. If these medications do not provide a long term result, dermatologist may suggest for other treatment options.

The other options:

BOTOX – The dermatologist injects BOTOX in the affected area to control excessive sweating. Though the results are reliable it should be repeated every 6-7 months.

Surgery – Removing sweat gland is another option. A minimally invasive procedure called suction curettage, a modified liposuction, is performed by plastic surgeon. Another surgery option is ETS (Endoscopic thoracic surgery). These surgeries may carry some side effects like compensatory sweating in areas like legs, back and thighs.

Laser option

Dermatologists mostly recommend laser treatment for underarm as lasers like Nd-YAG are safe and effective in treating axillary hyperhidrosis. This laser assisted treatment is done under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Lasers help to target specific area without affecting the surrounding area. The sweat glands are destroyed because of heat produced by laser beams. Multiple sessions are required to treat the area. Cold air is used to cool the surface area during the treatment procedure. Laser treatments are considered as a proven treatment or axillary hyperhidrosis.

At Skinovate we use advanced laser technologies for treating axillary hyperhidrosis so that the procedures are minimally invasive and can provide best long lasting results.
